Understanding the Problem 

In the heart of Mato Grosso do Sul in central Brazil, agricultural operations related to animal farming are on the rise to meet global food demands. However, traditional methods of managing animal waste pose significant environmental challenges.

 

Before the Brascarbon Methane Recovery Project began, animal manure and urine was collected in open lagoons. Here, the waste underwent anaerobic decomposition and released methane – a potent greenhouse gas. This harmful gas would then enter the air, polluting nearby cities, towns and villages.

 

Sustainable Solutions

The project sought to address these challenges by implementing a new system for managing animal waste. This involved constructing covered inground anaerobic reactors, or digesters, to process the organic material from the wastewater lagoons.

 

Instead of allowing the waste to decompose and emit methane, the digesters capture the methane produced and convert it into biogas. This biogas can then be used as a renewable energy source, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.

 

But the benefits of the initiative don't stop there... By capturing and flaring methane, the project further reduces its environmental footprint by reducing operational carbon emissions.

 

The Brascarbon Methane Recovery Project is more than just a carbon offsetting initiative – it's a beacon of hope for the future. By transforming animal waste into clean renewable energy, this project is paving the way for a more sustainable future for generations to come.
